Return to California
(Are America' priorities right?)
Marketstreet: bums, addicts, hustlers
garbage in the streets,
three blocks away,
in front of the government buildings,
thousands of lesbians and gays
protest the president's army directives.
Where ten years ago sagebrush grew
and rattlesnakes and coyotes lived
stands a gigantic Hyatt hotel,
like an over-dimensioned radio
from the thirties.
And two more hotels, restaurants
and banks, insurance buildings,
a Disneyland Mormon cathedral
in white marble.
La Jolla Plaza is half-abandoned.
My rental car locks all four doors
when I put the shift into "Drive".
We did not find the street to Black Beach.
Smoke-covered, burt-out shops
a block away from my friend's house.
Mercedes cabrios, Cadillacs and Rollses
fill Wilshire Boulevard.
Don't walk in the streets after sun-set!
LAPD can not cope with the gangs.
A city ordonance forbids smoking
in all restaurants in the city of L.A..
